The Purpose of AVID The purpose of AVID at Santan is to help your children become better critical thinkers, become advocates for themselves, and to prepare them for honors/AP classes, college, and beyond.

Community of Learners Students are in the process of deciding what type of student they will be. A community of peers striving for excellence can be a positive influence.

What is the AVID elective class and how does it help support your child? Organization: Binder Checks Community: AVID students become a community of learners through activities and AVID Fridays. Grade Accountability: Learning Logs College and career exploration opportunities -- Field Trips -- Guest Speakers Tutorials: Students bring a higher-level question about their school work to their tutorial group Students help guide and support each other through the inquiry process (asking questions – not just giving answers).

AVID What AVID isn’t . . . A Study Hall A remedial elective A place to complete homework A place to simply “get” the answers

Ways You as a Parent can help Support your Child Ask to check for loose paperwork in their binder OR papers in the wrong place. Ask to check Agendas, ask about classes and what they are learning (tests, homework, projects) Encourage your child to check his/her own grades on Infinite Campus and speak to or email the teacher. Encourage your child to go to Tutoring and participate in AVID tutorials.

Ways You Can Help Support the AVID program: Volunteer to be a guest speaker Volunteer to be a tutor once a week (paid/volunteer) Volunteer to help with service projects and trips
