A fly-by-night gambler attempts to woo a Salvation Army missioner for a $1,000 bet. Meanwhile, a beleaguered showgirl tries to hook her fiancé of 14 years, the founder of "the oldest, established, permanent, floating crap game in New York."

It is based on ”The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and "Blood Pressure" – two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories – most notably "Pick the Winner”.

Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser Book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows Loesser is also known for the musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying And he wrote the song, “Baby It’s Cold Outside”

The premiere on Broadway was on November 24, 1950 The premiere on Broadway was on November 24, 1950. It ran for 1200 performances at the 46th street theatre. (Now called Richard Rogers)
