PAINTING WEEK… REVIEW: Group Event#1 Journal Turn-In #1 (Next week - March 10th!) Make sure you take GOOD NOTES on the PowerPoint today. Refer to the handout as a guide, watch the videos, and learn some COOL STUFF! Writing Assignment Painting Activity

Chapter 7- Living With Art Painting Chapter 7- Living With Art

TEMPERA- Andrew Wyeth Use of smooth, blended earth tones Models were familiar- he would use friends and neighbors around the farm in Pennsylvania (click here for the only video to capture Wyeth at work!)

TEMPERA- Jacob Lawrence Used “raw, sharp, rough” effects with the paint Focused on the organic forms and geometric shapes- getting away from realism (click here for a video: Art and Social Context)

OIL- Jan Van Eyck Credited as the first artist to explore the possibilities of oil paints Painted in glazes- thin veils of color applied to the painting (click here for a video that interprets a famous Van Eyck painting)

OIL- Berthe Morisot Used a spontaneous approach to painting Used thick layers of color to add an expressive element to the medium

ACRYLIC- David Hockney Diluted the paint on the mountain- pouring it onto the canvas Used thick application of paint with brushes on the vase and flowers

ACRYLIC- Takashi Murakami Use of airbrushing to create a fine, detailed image His preference for flat forms was achieved by the creation of many shapes of color

Current Trends… Alexa Meade Video

Current Trends… SHINTARO OHATA

WATERCOLOR John Singer Sargent Controlled painting with a spontaneous feeling A transparent quality is shown with water and forms in nature

GOUACHE Wilfredo Lam Use of 2 techniques is possible with this medium: 1. transparent- where viewer is able to see colors underneath through a series of “washes” of color 2. opaque- where the artist completely hides the color underneath through full strength of the paint

Writing Activity Pick an artist and work of art- focus on painters! If possible, stay away from the generics of the Starry Night, Mona Lisa, etc… Open the “Analyzing Art Writing Assignment” link on my website (under “links and presentations”) Write about your art with the template that is presented. Focus on the art elements and principles, and be as specific as possible with your judgement and interpretation of the work of art. Use Microsoft Word and insert your image into the paper. We will print these out when finished! This writing gets a little detailed and quite specific- we will get the hang of the format this week- then delve into it further this semester!

Painting Activity: Pick up a sheet of paper Pick up the 3 primary colors Follow the guidelines on the image to the left! Put your name on the sheet, and place on the drying rack!
