Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands VISION 2010

Utilities Precinct (HI) Completed GOAL: To provide a specific precinct that collocate all of the islands utility services that does not have a detrimental impact on the Kampong; To improve headworks so that they can sustain community demand. RATIONALE: To collocate utilities within a inconspicuous area of island that does not adversely affect Kampong and tourist attractions; Common use of headworks, access roads etc; Liaison with Commonwealth to provide and improve utilities, particularly water and sewerage, to accommodate community demand.

Utilities Precinct (HI) (cont.) Completed PROPOSAL: Already the wastewater treatment plant, fuel bowsers and power plant are collocated separate from the kampong area. It will be Council’s intention to ensure that any future services will be collocated in this area; Ongoing liaison with the Commonwealth on the issue of upgrading headworks to adequately satisfy the community. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: DoTaRS AGENCY INVOLVEMENT: DoTaRS Service Providers TEAM RESPONSIBLE : CEO

Direction Island Precinct GOAL: To maintain the Trust Land referred to as Direction Island available to the community for public recreation purposes. PROPOSAL: To continually maintain and improve amenities available for visitors to Direction Island to ensure a pleasurable and memorable experience.

North Keeling Island Precinct GOAL: To provide a long term lease of North Keeling Island to the Commonwealth Government (Parks Australia) for conservation purposes.

Permaculture Precinct (HI) GOAL: To allocate a portion of land separate from the kampong, whereby residents may keep domestic animals such as chooks or pigeons and grow fruit and vegetables. RATIONALE: Allows the keeping of chooks and pigeons away from the residents to avoid nuisance such as noise, smells etc; The need to protect the quality of the fresh water lenses; Lack of available space within the kampong. PROPOSAL: Allocate parcels of land within the permaculture precinct to residents for this purpose.
