CLIMATE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Global Warming & Greenhouse Effect The greenhouse effect has been part of the earth's workings since its earliest days, well before humans. Many scientists feel these gasses have been a good thing for the earth…and a bad thing for the earth. Here is how it the Greenhouse Effect works: Atmospheric gases like carbon dioxide and methane constantly hover over the earth. The sun’s rays beam through and hit the earth, but the greenhouse gases trap some of the sun’s rays from bouncing off of the earth and back out into space. Because the sun’s heat is unable to bounce back into space, many scientists say the gases are trapping the heat and causing more warming to occur. . However, without the greenhouse effect, the planet would never have warmed enough to allow life to form in the first place. But as ever larger amounts of carbon dioxide have been released because of the development of industrial economies, the atmosphere has grown warmer at an accelerating rate: Since 1970, temperatures have gone up at nearly three times the average for the 20th century. The latest report from the climate panel predicted that the global climate is likely to rise between 3.5 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit if the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere reaches twice the level of 1750. By 2100, sea levels are likely to rise between 7 to 23 inches, it said, and the changes now underway will continue for centuries to come. Greenhouse gases = good & bad Gas Types = Carbon Dioxide AND _______

Include the following: ON MINI WHITE BOARDS Read last part of first paragraph closely and sketch out the greenhouse effect. Include the following: How sun’s rays bounce/reflect (use arrows) Two sources of greenhouse gasses The layer of gasses that trap heat

2 main factors influencing climate… ***On mid-term core exam 2 main factors influencing climate… 1. wind 2. water (ocean currents) How? wind & water spread heat around the earth

Global Warming belief that earth is heating up due to human activities Turn & Talk -- If true, what negative effects could global warming have on the planet? Come up with three.

Greenhouse effect Pollution creates a layer of gases in the atmosphere that traps in solar energy

COOPERATIVE ACTIVITIES 1. EXTREME WEATHER: (25 Points) In groups of TWO, create a diagram on the 5 types of extreme weather. Your diagram must include: a) a description of the extreme weather condition b) an explanation on how it forms c) a visual showing what it looks like d) info on how to prepare/protect against it Use pages 51—53 2. GREENHOUSE EFFECT: (20 points) create a diagram that accurately illustrates and explains the Greenhouse Effect. Also, include a written paragraph on what impact the effect could have on the earth if the theory proves true. (Use Rubric provided)

2. GREENHOUSE EFFECT: On a piece of computer paper, create a visual that accurately illustrates and explains the Greenhouse Effect as it might occur in a typical city. Include the following: At least two sources of pollution The layer of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere that trap in the solar heat (label what kind of gasses) The sun’s rays Also, include a written paragraph on what impact the effect could have on the earth if humans are the cause. 2.
