principles of good parenting practice Dr. Ketan Bharadva MD DCH www.parentingforpeace.in

Oscar wilde……. Children begin by loving their parents after a time they judge them rarely, if ever, do they forgive them. www.parentingforpeace.in

Characteristic of children Children absorb what is happening around them-- whether we intend for them or not. Children don’t wait to learn. They learn all the time and they begin early. Each child is unique Children learn from experiences Children experiment Children are continuously developing. They develop at different rates They think differently They have feelings like adults- they can sense yours as well They need to be taught about how to behave (not physical punishment) They need limits/structure They need adults to guide them They need you to keep them safe They need you to understand them www.parentingforpeace.in

Unconditional love The greatest gift to the child Give: child gives what he receives Show: Never waste a chance to say “I love you”, “I value you” Hug generously: “pyar ki zappi” Do not forge Consistency Accept his limitations and emotions Understand child’s limitation, act accordingly Be forgiving www.parentingforpeace.in

Nurture child's self-esteem. Appreciate Actively participate and involve in child’s activities Treat your child with respect. Reward desirable behavior. Catch kids being good Allow them a sense of mastery Foster your child's independence. Do not compare Do not criticize Do not label Non judgemental : If you judge them, you will have no time left to love them ….. Mother Teresa Make them overhear nice things about them you say to others www.parentingforpeace.in

Communication Make communication a priority Healthy Verbal Nonverbal Recognize your child’s feelings. They will forget what to tell but will remember how you made them feel Listen to your child. Listening is more than hearing, it is sensing what is not said Listening is loving. Fundamental need of humans Undivided attention One to one basis Relate with the children: Stop trying to perfect the child but try perfecting relation with them www.parentingforpeace.in

Be flexible Be flexible and willing to adjust your parenting style Expect what is reasonable. Apologizing Does not mean that you are wrong and the other is right but means that you value relation more than ego Learn from proper sources www.parentingforpeace.in

Spare time Best thing to spare on child is time Quality Quantity time for your kids. Child appreciates your presence more than your presents Be involved in your child's life. You have lifetime to work but child is a child only once www.parentingforpeace.in

role model Child are never good listener to adults but never fail to imitate them. So don’t worry if they do not listen you but worry that they always watch you. Be a good role model Be self disciplined What you do matters Give them strong roots of values to hold encourage to seek knowledge let them fly high with wings of confidence to explore the world Instill values: patience, humor and kindness Goals of life, way of living life www.parentingforpeace.in

Discipline matters A behavior rewarded is the behavior repeated regardless of type of reward A child gives what he receives Establishes inner guidance system to choose right and wrong Age appropriate explanations Proper time (immediacy) Explain your rules and decisions. Set limits and be consistent with your discipline. Separate the child from the behavior. Consistency No physical punishment No emotional punishment No subtle violence www.parentingforpeace.in
