Presentation transcript:

What do you call a group of cows? A herd.

What do you call a group of seagulls? A flock.

What do you call a group of whales? A pod.

What do you call a group of baboons? A troop.

What do you call a group of porcupines? A prickle.

What do you call a group of cells? Tissue. Tissue makes up the organs, systems, and structures in your body.

What are some different types of cells found within animals? Blood Cells Skin Cells Nerve Cells

If different types of cells have different jobs, do the tissues they make up have different jobs also? Yes! There are 4 main types of tissue. These include Connective Tissue, Epithelial Tissue, Muscle Tissue, and Nervous Tissue. Copy this table into your journal and complete it as we discuss each type. Tissue Type Job Description Connective Epithelial Muscle Nervous

Connective tissue (CT) is a kind of tissue that supports, connects, or separates different types of tissues and organs of the body. Bones, tendons, and ligaments are all made of connective tissue.

Epithelial Tissue covers the outside of the body and lines organs and cavities. The cells in this type of tissue are very closely packed together and joined with little space between them. Epithelial tissue helps to protect organisms from micro-organisms, injury, and fluid loss.

Muscle Tissue is made of "excitable" cells that are capable of contraction. Of all of the different tissue types, muscle tissue is the most abundant in most animals. Through exercise, such as weight lifting, these cells enlarge but the overall number of cells does not increase.

Nervous tissue is responsible for sensing stimuli and sending signals to and from different parts of an organism. Neurons are a special kind of cell that forms the basic unit of nervous tissue.

If different types of cells look different, do the tissues they make up look different also?

How does the robot demonstrate how the four types of tissue (connective, epithelial, muscle, and nervous) work together?

Cell Mobile Go to the class website and click the Red Star. Read about 6 different types of cells. Follow the directions on your checklist to create a mobile. Work that is not high-quality or not neatly completed will be re-done!
