AP Overview Expectations & Summer Work May 25, 2017

AP Expectations Advanced Placement courses are designed to challenge students who demonstrate a consistent record of outstanding achievement. Rich course material, vibrant classroom discussions and demanding assignments help teens develop the constant mastery and critical thinking skills expected of college students. In addition to content, AP courses focus on preparation for the College Board AP Test. Typically students who take AP courses have excelled in previous honors courses. These are college level courses taught in high school. The course work is very rigorous and requires additional time outside of school. Make sure that you are able to commit the time needed for an AP course.

AP Testing First two weeks in May $94 Approximately 3.5 hours Offsite All students are expected to take exams Fee waiver (free/reduced lunch) All students are expected to take the AP exam in May. The purpose of taking the course is to prepare you for the exam. By taking the exam, you have the potential to earn college credit or be exempt from a college course. The exam also prepares students for the challenge of college and exams they will take in college. The format is often very similar. Check with individual colleges to see what score is required for course to be accepted or visit www.collegeboard.org. The cost of the exam tends to go up a couple of dollars each year. The cost of the exam should not be a reason for not taking the exam. Students have the option of paying in installments. If you receive free/reduced lunch, there is a fee reduction. Testing is conducted off school grounds and students are expected to find their own transportation to testing.

AP Scheduling Conflicts: counselor will contact student in summer with e-mail they provided on course selection sheet if there is a conflict in their schedule with AP classes Request does not guarantee course Make good choices If an AP course does not fit into your schedule, your counselor will contact you over the summer to discuss options. Do not overload yourself. Colleges want to see you take challenging courses that are most suitable for you. It defeats the purpose to take an AP course and do poorly. Selecting a course does not guarantee you will be scheduled into the course. Course offerings are based upon the number of students who sign up. If you decide to add or drop an AP or dual enrollment course, see your counselor prior to leaving for the summer.

AP Drop/Add Drop Fail after 1st interim Impacts GPA Transcript The drop fail will appear on transcript and impact gpa. Make good choices. You have the first five school days to drop a class. Dropping a class once your schedule has been created could also severely limit your options. If you decided to drop or add an AP/dual enrollment course, see your counselor prior to leaving for the school year.

Summer Assignments Summer assignments do not come in a specific format for every class, and it can vary greatly depending on the course requirements.  Summer work helps to prepare students not only with the content, but also by encouraging proper discipline and time-management skills to complete the assignments. The summer assignment should be a good indicator of potential success in an AP course and give you an idea of what the course will be like. If you struggle to complete the summer assignment, you may want to re-evaluate your course selection.

Whether or not a class is offered is dependent upon the number of students who register for the course. If you decide to add or drop an AP or dual enrollment course, see your counselor prior to leaving for the summer.

It will tell you the minimum score you must earn on the AP exam and what courses are accepted and the equivalent course.

Dual Enrollment Pros vs Cons Importance of Application/Paperwork By taking one of these courses and earning nothing less than a final grade of 75%, you will earn college credit. These credits may be transferred to other colleges/universities. Check with the institution that you are planning to attend to see if they will accept the credit.

Cost - $165.00 per course Delivery of Instruction- These courses will take place during the school day in ASD classrooms. Courses will be taught by Appoquinimink School District teachers Requirements- Be a high school Junior or Senior when course is offered and obtain parent permission Registration- Fall 2017 deadline August 11, 2017 Courses Offered: All courses require a score of 480 or higher on the English portion of the PSAT or a passing score on the Accuplacer exam Anatomy and Physiology (Bio 120) English 101/ 102- Full year class Psychology Sociology

Cost - $75.00 per credit hour Delivery of Instruction- all Access WVA courses are accessed and taught online by WVU instructors. These courses would be taken outside of courses taken during the day.
