Glasgow

Glasgow The City of Glasgow is the most populous unitary authority area in Scotland. It is situated on the River Clyde in the west central lowlands of Scotland. The people of Glasgow are known as Glaswegians. Glasgow was once known as the "Second City of the British Empire" and had a population of over one million people. During the Industrial Revolution Glasgow established itself as a major transatlantic trading port with the Clyde the world's pre-eminent shipbuilding centre building many famous vessels such as the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary

Glasgow Coat of Arms.

The world's tallest cinema, the eighteen-screen Cineworld is situated on Renfrew Street. The city centre is also home to four of Glasgow's higher education institutions: the University of Strathclyde, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Caledonian University.

The city centre is home to most of Glasgow's main cultural venues: the Theatre Royal (performing home of Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet), The Theatre Royal is the oldest theatre in Glasgow, located at 282 Hope Street in Cowcaddens. The theatre originally opened in 1867, changing its name to the Theatre Royal in 1869, and is the longest running theatre in Scotland. It is the birthplace of Howard & Wyndham Ltd, owners and managers of theatres in Scotland and England during the early 20th century, created by its chairman Baillie Michael Simons

the King's Theatre It was designed by English theatre architect Frank Matcham and opened in 1904. The theatre is primarily a receiving house for touring musicals, dance, comedy and circus-type performances. The theatre also provides a prominent stage for local amateur productions. The King's Theatre also stages an annual pantomime, produced by First Family Entertainment  The theatre is currently run by the Ambassador Theatre Group, although Glasgow City Council own the building.

Today Glasgow has Scotland's largest and most economically important commerce and retail sector. It is one of Europe's top 16 financial centres and home to many of the country's leading businesses. Glasgow is the second most popular tourist destination in Scotland after the capital Edinburgh
