First in India in 1853 from Bombay to Thana Length of railway network is 63140 km. 5 billion passengers and 350 million tones of freight are transported annually.

There are 17 zones and each zone consists of certain number of divisions with a total of 67 divisions.

Three main categories of tracks: Broad gauge – 1676mm Meter gauge – 1000mm Narrow gauge – 762mm - 610mm

Two basic types of engines are: Locomotives Multiple units

locomotives eg WDM-3D Letters from the left indicate types of gauge, power source, operation and horse power.

Production units CLW: The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in Chittaranjan makes electric locomotives. DLW: The Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi makes diesel locomotives. ICF: The Integral Coach Factory in Perambur makes integral coaches. These have a monocoque construction, and the floor is an integral unit with the undercarriage. RCF: The Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala also makes coaches for the Indian Railways. RWF: The Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka manufactures wheels and axles.
