1. Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers DARTS: I CAN: Identify and correct misplaced modifiers. Identify and correct dangling modifiers.

Recognizing Misplaced Modifiers RULE 1. A misplaced modifier is placed too far from the modified word and appears to modify the wrong word or words. Misplaced Modifier– The girl fell over a hurdle running on the track. Correction—The girl running on the track fell over a hurdle.

RULE 2… A dangling modifier seems to modify the wrong word or no word at all because the word it should modify has been omitted from the sentence. Dangling Participial Phrase: Measuring carefully, each ingredient was placed into the bowl. (Who did the measuring?) Corrected Sentence: Measuring carefully, the cook placed each ingredient into the bowl.

Humorous DanGLinG Modifiers… Covered in whipped cream, I was excited to eat the ice cream sundae.” “The cops chased the bear in the squad car.” “I’m looking for a small table for my kid with short legs.” “Lisa wore a silver woman’s necklace.”

ASSIGNMENT 1: Page 414 in WRITING COACH book. 16.5A and 16.5B—Do as the directions say. WRITING: Write four sentences, each containing misplaced or dangling modifiers. Use one of the words below in each sentence: shell, turducken, wire, paper, funny.

PARALLELSIM— Involves presenting equal ideas, words, phrases, clauses, or sentences of similar types. EX://The athlete looked strong, fit, and agile.

Correcting Faulty Parallelism Correct a sentence containing faulty parallelism by rewriting it so that each parallel idea is expressed in the same grammatical structure. NONPARALLEL– Scheduling, purchasing, and management of inventory are all steps in the retail process. CORRECTION—Scheduling, purchasing, and managing of inventory are all steps in the retail process.

FAULTY COORDINATION Use and, and other coordinating conjunctions only to connect ideas of equal importance. CORRECT COORDINATION—Blake designed the airplane, and Jane built it. FAULTY COORDINATION—I didn’t do well, and the contest was easy.

CORRECTING FAULTY COORDINATION Put unrelated ideas into separate sentences. Ex// Production of ships increased in World War II. Ships became a decisive factor in the war. 2. Put less important ideas into dependent clauses or phrases. Ex:// I didn’t do well, even though the contest was easy.

SENTENCE VARIATIONS Today, you will be using the sentence variations sheet to write a round robin story. Everyone will begin their own story using the first sentence variation and then, will use the variations in order each time a paper is passed to them. So….You will use variation one on your own story, variation two on the story passed to you, variation three on the next story passed, and so on. We will continue to add to the stories until all variations have been used. You will start with the following story starter…. I finally found out why I kept receiving mail addressed to "Phineas Q. Hogbottom."
