SCOTTISH UNIT – MIGRATION & EMPIRE 1830 - 1939 Discover why so many Scots moved within, and away from Scotland, in the nineteenth century. Find out about the experience of those emigrants that came to Scotland at this time, where they came from, why they came, and how they got on in our country. Learn about the impact that Scots had abroad, as they emigrated to all four corners of the globe. Uncover how the British Empire shaped Scotland into becoming the country it is today.

BRITISH UNIT – BRITAIN 1851 – 1951 Discover how democratic Britain became up to 1928 and the reasons why this happened Find out about the Suffragettes and the impact they had on the campaign to get women the vote. Look at the steps made at the start of the 20th Century to tackle povery and inequality amongst the classes of Britain before World War One. Discover the ‘Five Giants’ that were tackled by the government and how these helped shape the modern British Welfare State

WORLD UNIT – EUROPEAN AND WORLD : RUSSIA, 1881 - 1921 Study the times of the last Tsar’s in Russia and how they were able to keep a tight grip in power over the world’s largest country. Look at early attempts to overthrow the Tsar and how the Tsar was able to re-assert his authority before World War One. Discover how the Tsar was eventually toppled and how the people finally seized power in Russia Examine how Lenin and Trotsky were able to rise to power and establish their new Communist party as the government of Russia

ASSESSMENT 3 x End of Unit Assessments – one for each unit 3 x Internal Assessments – one for each unit An Assignment worth 30 marks The Exam Paper worth 60 marks

ASSIGNMENT identify a historical issue which invites debate and argument research and investigate the historical issue, using a range of sources of information draw on and apply knowledge and understanding to analyse the causes and/or impact of the historical issue analyse, evaluate and synthesise information in a structured manner refer to relevant historical sources identify different perspectives and/or points of view structure information and present a well-reasoned conclusion supported by evidence It will be finally produced in one 90 minute session in exam conditions by an SQA mandated deadline

EXAM PAPER 60 marks 3 sections, one for each unit The Scottish Unit will address source handling questions Evaluate the usefulness of a source (6 marks) How fully does a source address an issue (9 marks) Compare the views of two sources on an issue (5 marks) The British and World Units will be a single essay or extended response answer worth 20 marks each
