JOURNAL METRICS: A SHORT HISTORY 10/23/20173 The Journal Impact Factor was the first metric created for scholarly journals. Eugene Garfield first conceived of the idea of an impact factor in The Journal Impact Factor was the only metric available for many years. But once the Internet made gathering statistics easier, other metrics were created. The Eigenfactor was the next popular metric, followed by SJR and SNIP.

TAB FVE 10/23/20174 Journal Impact Factor (JIF) shows the average number of times articles from a journal published in the past two years that have been cited in the JCR year. For example, - Impact Factor of 1.0 means that, on average, the articles published one or two years ago have been cited one time. - Impact Factor of 2.5 means that, on average, the articles published one or two years ago have been cited two and a half times.

TAB FVE 10/23/20175 ► Notes Citation practices vary between disciplines, so Journal Impact Factors should NOT be used to compare journals across different subject areas. Journal Impact Factors cannot assess the quality of individual articles. Not all journals have an Impact Factor - they must be indexed in Journal Citation Reports, i.e., Science Citation Index (SCI) and/or Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) of Web of Science.

What is 5-year Impact Factor? 10/23/20177 The 5-year Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from a journal published in the last five years have been cited in the JCR year (as compared to the last 2 years for IF). ► Advantage of 5-year Impact Factor The calculation of the 5-year Impact Factor includes a longer time span which allows more citation activities. It may be more appropriate for subject disciplines such as Arts and Humanities which take longer time to have the citation activities.

Eigenfactor Score and Article Influence Score 10/23/20178 Eigenfactor Score : Similar to the 5-Year Journal Impact Factor, but weeds out journal self-citations. Citations from high-quality journals are weighted more than citations from lesser known journals Can be used to compare journals from different subject fields Article Influence Score: determines the average influence of journal's articles over the first five years after publication. They are more suitable for research areas which take longer time to have citation activities.

What is CiteScore? 10/23/20179 The calculation of CiteScore for the current year is based on the number of citations received by a journal in that year for the documents published in the journal in the past three years, divided by the documents indexed in Scopus published in those three years. CiteScore metrics are a family of 8 indicators, include: CiteScore, CiteScore Tracker, CiteScore Percentile, CiteScore Quartiles, CiteScore Rank, Citation Count, Document Count and Percentage Cited.

What is CiteScore? 10/23/ Major difference between CiteScore and Journal Impact Factor:  CiteScore calculation is based on Scopus data, while Impact Factor is based on Web of Science data.  CiteScore uses a 3-year window while Impact Factor adopts a 2-year window.  CiteScore includes all document types indexed by Scopus, include articles, reviews, letters, notes, editorials, conference papers, etc. while Impact Factor only includes "citable documents" which are articles and reviews.

What are SJR and SNIP? 10/23/ SJR (SCImago Journal Rank): ranks publications by weighted citations per document. is a prestige metric based on the idea that not all citations are the same. Citations are weighted more or weighted less – depending on the source they come from. with SJR, subject field, quality and reputation of the journal have a direct effect on the value of a citation. with SJR, self-citations are limited to the maximum of 33%.

What are SJR and SNIP? 10/23/ SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper): measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. The impact of a single citation is given higher value in subject areas where citations are less likely, and vice versa. For example, journals in Mathematics, Engineering and Social Sciences tend to have higher values than titles in Life Sciences. allows direct comparison of sources in different subject fields.

When to consider SJR and SNIP? 10/23/ Use SJR...Use SNIP... to enhance position of post-prestigious journals (SJR emphasizes the differences) if focusing on Life and Health Sciences if topicality is important in journal performance if you want to weight citations based on the status of the citing journal if value is less important than rank (SNIP reduces the differences) if focusing on Engineering, Computer Science, and Social Sciences if you are focused on subject field if you think that impact and topicality are separate and should be considered independently

Google Scholar Metrics 10/23/ journals are ranked by their h5-index and h5-median. h5-index is the h-index for articles published in the last 5 complete years. It is the largest number h such that h articles published in have at least h citations each. For example, the h5-index of a journal is 185 means that 185 articles published in the journal in have received at least 185 citations each article. h5-median is the median number of citations for the articles that make up its h5-index.
