Grant and Reconstruction face problems… Grant is plagued with scandal in his second term! And there’s the PANIC of 1873! Greeley… not so fast! “I was the worst beaten man that ever ran for that high office. I have been assailed so bitterly I hardly know whether I was running for President or the penitentiary.” Credit Mobiler Affair- to much $$ for the Railroad Whiskey Ring Dissent within party Currency Dispute with PANIC of 1873 Belknap and Indian Territory

The Dying Cause of Reconstruction Reconstruction was a dying cause. Reconstruction legislatures taxed and spent heavily Reconstruction came to symbolize corruption, greed, and poor government As federal troops began to remove themselves from the south, more freedmen were prevented from voting

Election of 1876 Electoral Map The election of 1876 was literally TOO close to call. Because votes were largely counted by hand, a lot of fraud was suspected in this election. Florida (sound familiar? 2000) was a source of much of the voting dispute.

1876. The fight is ON! Who’s Gonna Win? TILDEN (D.) HAYES (R.)

1876. The fight is ON! Who’s Gonna Win? Corrupt Bargain was child’s play. The Spoils System worked much better…. Right? Gentlemen, if I could turn your attention to the Election of 1824. A compromise, *cough* Cough* Bribe *Cough* might work well!

Compromise of 1877 (6) Agreement in which the democrats decided to give Rutherford B. Hayes the victory in the Presidential election of 1876 and Hayes in return vows to remove the rest of federal troops from the South

Reconstruction Failure or Success? Successes of Reconstruction Failures of Reconstruction Republicans carries out their two main goals, to rebuild the Union and to help repair the war-torn South Reconstruction stimulated economic growth in the south and created new wealth in the North The Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments guaranteed African Americans the rights of citizenship, equal protection under the law, and suffrage. African Americans gained the right to testify in court and to sit on juries. As in the era of slavery, most black southerners remained in a cycle of poverty that allowed almost no escape. African Americans still lacked property, economic opportunity and political power After the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, southern state government and terrorist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan effectively denied African Americans the right to vote. Racist attitudes toward African American continued, in both the South and the North

Reconstruction Failure or Success? Successes of Reconstruction Failures of Reconstruction Reconstruction left a lasting bitterness among many white southerners toward the federal government and the Republican party. While Reconstruction programs resulted in the rebuilding and expansion of southern infrastructure, the region was slow to industrialize. The Southern economy was continued to emphasize agriculture and to lag for behind the industrialize economy of the North. Reconstruction did not address concerns of groups such as farmers wanting regulation of railroads, workers seeking safe conditions, and advocates of women's suffrage. The Freeman’s Bureau and other organizations helped many black families obtain housing, jobs and schooling. Southern states adopted the system of tax-supported, mandatory education practices in the North. Increased access to education would benefit whites and blacks alike.

Reconstruction may be “over”… but the bitterness begins
