How was the South ‘reconstructed’ between 1866-1877? Learning Objectives: Enquire into what the term Reconstruction means in the context of the USA in 1865 Examine the social, political and economic changes which occurred in Southern States during Reconstruction Evaluate the success of the policy of Reconstruction

The rebuilding of the South after the Civil War is called the Reconstruction. Reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877. The purpose of the Reconstruction was to help the South become a part of the Union again.

The battle between State and Federal Government The struggle between State powers and the Federal Government, particularly over the treatment of freed slaves did not end at the end of the Civil War. The battle continued as Southern States tried to hang on to their old ideas, especially where African Americans were concerned. Think how this links to the Black Codes!
