Which KiTE do you think can fly successfully?

What are the three main parts of a kite? Sail, tail, string What happens if you try to fly a kite without a tail? Without a tail, a kite won’t stay balanced and glide through the air. Each part of the tail has to be the right size, and it has to be attached in the right place How then is the U.S. Constitution like a kite? Representative government is like the sail of a kite, and the seven principles are like the parts of the tail. The U.S. Constitution would not have worked without the seven underlying principles!!

7 Principles of the Constitution Popular Sovereignty republicanism Limited government federalism Separation of powers Checks and balances Individual rights

Popular sovereignty- elections, amendments, recalls PEOPLE VOTE- people have the power Republicanism- electing Senators and Representatives to make our laws Limited government- the government cannot tell people where to live or what to do. 4. Federalism- establishes the division of power between the federal government and the states. Pg 235 in textbook- copy venn diagram 5. Separation of powers- there are 3 branches of government with their own functions and powers. (Executive-enforces laws, Legislative-makes laws, Judicial- interprets laws) 6. Checks and balances- President can veto laws, Congress can impeach the President; the Supreme Court determines if laws are constitutional. 7. Individual rights- Bill of Rights-right to criticize the government, right to bear arms, right to a trail by jury.
