Basic Concepts of Vowels 1.音素（phoneme）：发音的最小单位。英语中有48个音素。 2.元音（vowel）：构成音节的主要音素。发音时口腔中气流不受阻碍，声带振动。英语中总共有20个元音。 3.单元音（monophthong）：发音时，舌位、唇形、开口度始终不变的元音。 4.双元音（diphthong）：联合的两个元音作为一个整体出现。两个元音之间有平滑的过渡。

How to pronunce the diphthongs？ 双元音音素由两个元音组成，发音时由一个元音向另一个元音滑动，口型有变化。前一个元音发音清晰响亮，且时间长；后一个元音发音模糊软弱，且时间短。特别要注意的三点是： (1)不要将前后两个音断开，应连贯成为一个整体： (2)不要因为后一个元音发音短小而将其忽略； (3)发音时滑动过程要完整，时间要充分。
