The Job Advertisement The purpose of a job advert is to get as many suitable people as possible to apply for the job. Could be advertised internally - cheaper, vacancy may be filled quicker, candidate will already work for the company but the promotion will leave another vacancy to fill and no ‘new blood’. If advertised externally – the company has to decide where to advertise. The advert should describe the job and the skills required. It may indicate pay and it must explain how the person should apply for the job.

Recruitment Advertising Where the organisation will place the adverts depends on: The target audience – who you want to see your advert The size of the labour market – this depends on the nature of the job The budget – different media cost different amounts. Employing recruitment agencies /consultants also comes at a price! Internal is cheaper than external.

Job Descriptions A job description is a written description of what the job consists of. It includes the formal title of the job, the main purpose of the job, the main duties and any occasional duties. It will say who the job holder is responsible to and whether they are responsible for managing other staff. It may also indicate salary.

Person Specifications The person specification lists the qualifications, experience, skills and personal qualities of the ideal candidate. These are sometimes divided into ESSENTIAL criteria which the candidate must have and DESIRABLE criteria which the right candidate should have.
