Cat Facts A cat is a popular house pet, and one of the smartest of all tame animals. Cats make faithful, friendly, companions. Most cats want to have their way. This is why it takes longer to tame a cat than to train a dog. The cat helps man. Cats kill rats and mice in homes, stores and warehouses, and farm buildings. 2

Cat Facts (continued) Some cats will kill songbirds, but must be trained to leave birds alone. Cats can learn to do many tricks. They seem to have pride and do silly things. Most cats “meow” to attract attention when they are hungry or when they want to enter or leave the house. All cats are clever hunters. 3

Cat Facts (continued) There are several breeds of cats. They have short hair or long hair. Their coats of hair can be one color or a mixture of colors. Most of them are medium-sized and have slender, muscular bodies. Cats need to be clean, dry and warm. They need a warm, dry box or basket for sleeping. The cat catches colds easily. 4

Cat’s Habitat Most cats live in warm, arid habitats with little water, and others live in jungle-like habitats. A domestic cat lives in the human house. Wild cats need a larger territory to roam. 5

Cat’s Diet All cats eat meat. They use their sharp claws and teeth to tear their food. Their claws help them to climb trees to search for food or to escape from an enemy. The adult cats eat only two meals each day. Large cats may require three meals each day. They like milk and cream. Cats enjoy eating fish and chicken. All hard, sharp bones should be removed from fish and chicken before giving these foods to cats. 6

Cat’s Life Cycle The mother cat chooses a secret place for her kittens to keep them safe from enemies. A kitten’s eyes do not fully open until 8 to 10 days after birth. Bright light could easily injure their eyes. 0 -1 years a cat us considered a kitten. Between 1 – 6 years, cats are considered an adult. Cats can live longer than dogs. Cats can live until their late teens to early 20’s. 7
