HW 4.4(g) Due tomorrow: PW 11-4 # 1-9(odd), 18-28(even) **Check Website!!!

Rational Functions Did you notice on the directions for PW 11-1 it said “State any excluded values”? In the expression x – 2, what would happen if x = 3? x – 3 Therefore x = 3 is an excluded value in the function. We would state the function as: x – 2, x ≠ 3

Rational Functions An excluded value in a rational function makes the function undefined. State the excluded values in the rational functions: 7(d2 + 2) 2(3d – 1) (b) 6x(x – 5) . (x – 5)(x + 8)

Guiding question: How are rational functions simplified?

Rational Functions To simplify rational functions first factor the numerator, then factor the denominator, and then carry out operations as usual.

Adding & Subtracting Rational Functions How do we add/subtract rational numbers with the same denominator? Add the numerators and keep the denominator! How do we add/subtract rational numbers with the different denominators? Butterfly Method!

Adding & Subtracting Rational Functions 4 + 2 = x + 3 x + 3 4x + 7 – 3x + 5 = 3x2 + 2x – 8 3x2 + 2x – 8 3 + 1 = 4x 8 7 + 3 = x + 4 x – 5

Adding & Subtracting Rational Functions TB pg 676 # 29 a – 4 . a + 3 a + 5
