English Modern School Parents Evening

Welcome I am Ms. Linda VanLaan, the Primary Assistant Principal, and will be teaching Math and Science for Mr. Joe in class 3C. I am from the U.S., where I taught Year 3 students for 16 years prior to coming to the Middle East as a school administrator. It will be my pleasure to meet the families of English Modern School and work closely with the students in Year 3C during the next few weeks.

Welcome My name is Dorota Scislowska, I am the Curriculum Coordinator at EMS Al Khor, and will be teaching English for Mr. Joe in class 3C. I am from Poland, and I taught Year 3 students at the EMS Doha for the last five years. I look forward to working with the students of 3C.  

School Times Gates open at 7:00 – before this children will not be allowed on the playground. Arriving after 07:30 children will receive a late slip. School ends at 1:47 except on Thursday (12:39) If you are picking up your child after 2:00, please check the board on the secretary’s desk in the main lobby with the location of the late class Students will not be permitted to leave without a parent/driver present on campus (students cannot go to the parking lot unattended)

Curriculum Follow the Cambridge International Primary Programme (CIPP). We use Lucy Calkins ‘ Reading and Writing Workshop’ for teaching English. Mathematics –Everyday Math Science – following the guidelines laid down in the CIPP using FOSS Kits and Cambridge resources Library- One lesson every week – children may take 2 books. Tuesday is our library day.

Curriculum Overview Language Arts: This year we will learn to read and write through the comprehensive program of Lucy Calkin’s Workshop Model. It includes reading and writing mainly, word study, and grammar all integrated within the program. Students will be able to: read independently with fluency, expression, and phrasing. read actively by taking notes (tracks of thinking) write independently to respond to letters write to retell, summarize, or sequence events of a story write an analytical piece following the scheme: I notice, I think, I realize to shape their own understanding of a nonfiction writing. apply their understanding of spelling patterns to spell new words

Curriculum Overview continued Math: Understand place value Different strategies for addition and subtraction using number lines, number square, cubes and using place value Fact family for addition and subtraction Understand whole numbers, fractions and mixed numbers Multiplication concept and times tables Division concepts Fact family for multiplication and division Geometrical shapes: 2-D and 3-D Measurement Science/Social Studies: Habitats and environments, My Community, Life Cycles and Plant Growth, Individual needs and wants, Heroes and Heroines in society, Forces and Motion, Seasons and weather The first half of Term 1 will focus on Social Studies, the second half of Term 1 will focus on Science

It is a classroom-based social-emotional learning programme NEW!!! It is a classroom-based social-emotional learning programme with lessons and reinforcement activities designed to: Increase children’s school success Decrease problem behaviours Children with good social-emotional skills can: What Is the Program? (10 min.) Talking Points Transition to the next topic: Now that you know more about how the program will benefit your child, let's take a closer look at what the program is. Have empathy Manage strong emotions Solve interpersonal problems Make friends Get along well with others Persist at tasks and follow directions

School Counselling Service at EMS Al Khor The Counselling Service is an additional resource, well integrated into our student support system. Our School Counsellor meets with students on a range of issues relating to their social-emotional well-being and academic success. Our School Counsellor also provides Career Counselling services for our Secondary students. Parents with concerns relating to their child can make an appointment to meet with our School Counsellor. Counselling at EMS is goal oriented and strength based. Confidentiality is assured (in keeping with ethical guidelines). The Counselling Office is located on the 2nd Floor above the Reception Area

Homework Description of the work to be covered in the week ahead shall be uploaded to the Year 3 Weebly site every Sunday. Homework is due every Thursday. Students should complete the homework on their own. Homework should take between 30 to 45 min. Please make sure you sign the reading log every night.

Absences Important that children attend school for all designated school days. More than 36 days, the child is not promoted.

Early Release Must be a valid reason to be released before the scheduled end of the school day. Forms must be completed and signed by the Primary Principal or the Director.

Assessment Continuous assessment using the work the children do in class and home as a base. Observation of the child’s participation in class activities, group activities and individual activities. Summative assessments at the end of topics. Standardised formative assessment at the end of September. Notice will be given of all summative assessments.

Textbooks and Stationery Children received their stationery order which will remain in class and be distributed as required. All subject textbooks are required to stay in the classroom. Levelled readers will be taken home each week.

Weebly This year, all information will be updated weekly on the school website under Year 3. Homework, upcoming tests and events, and weekly overviews will be provided here. Please contact us via Weebly using the communication box.
