Aquaculture Unit 11th -12th Grade

Learning Targets I can identify 5 breeds of fish? I can identify various ways to grow fish?

Aquaculture Production of aquatic plants, animals, and other species.

Aqua crops Commercially produced aquatic plants, animals, and other species.

Production Intensity The number or weight of aquatic species in a volume of water.

Fish Vertebrates, or animals with backbones.

Mollusks Have thick, hard shells. Ex. Shrimp, Oysters, Mussels

Crustaceans Exoskeleton Bottom Feeders

Water Facilities The structures in which aqua crops are grown.

Ponds Water impoundments made by building earthen dams or levees. 1 acre – 50 acre ponds 20 acre average size.

Raceway Water impoundment that uses flowing water. Long and narrow 3’-4’ deep water

Tanks Made of plastic, fiberglass, concrete, and metal. Often used for intensive fish culture.

Pens Confine fish in large bodies of water. Pen: Bottom of the pen is joined with the earth in the pond, lake or stream.

Cages Float on the surface of the water and do not touch the earth at the bottom.

Production Cycle The complete production of a crop.

Brood fish The sexually mature fish kept for reproduction

Spawning Nest Container large enough for the pair of fish and provides some protection for the spawn.

Fingerling An immature fish.

Fry Young fish that at are larvae when they hatch.

Meal Food Finely ground feed used with small fish.

Pellet Feed Feed product made by binding meal into larger particles.

Hatchery Place where eggs are artificially incubated and harvested.

Incubation Time between spawning and when the young fish are hatched from the eggs.

Harvesting Capturing the aqua crop so that it can be hauled and sold to a processing plant.

Catfish Popular for fish farms. .25-50acre ponds Stocked at 1500 per acre

Bass Live in Lakes and Rivers Cross of a female white bass and a male stripped bass.

Salmon Start in rivers and streams. Will migrate to oceans to live until time to spawn. Populations are in low numbers.

Tilapia 3rd most in production. Can handle dirty water Sometimes used as a fish to cleanup after other fish.

Fresh Water Shrimp Weigh 4-6 ounces Shrimp are sold by the count. Ex. 41-51 shrimp= 41-51 per pound. Like warm temps. Grown in ponds

Fish for Fish Tanks
