Course Description This unit introduces students to digital photography and the digital manipulation of images using computer software. Students develop a personal creative style using elements and principles of compositional design. Student further develop their digital studio understanding by producing artworks using Graphics Tablets and photomontage. Self-paced learning enables students to complete advanced skills and Photoshop techniques. Students also research photographic artist and analyse their artwork discussing compositional, aesthetic and related social and cultural relationships.

There are 7 work tasks in the Digital Photography course. Why Study this? Work Tasks There are 7 work tasks in the Digital Photography course. The first two look at composition and the elements of design and look at what makes a good photograph. The third task is a series of tutorials on the computer software “Adobe Photoshop”. Photoshop is used to enhance digital images and does for digital photography what the darkroom did for film photography. The next two tasks focus on the manual use of the digital SLR camera. We look at “Aperture” and “Shutter Speed” and their effects on a photograph Work Task 6 involves creating a photographic folio. Work Task 7 is extension work and looks at a number of advanced photographic techniques and includes the use of graphics tablets.

Subject pathway…. Photography can be continued in VCE through Studio Arts. It can be used as a creative media in the same way painting, sculpture and drawing are. Students can create Photographic art pieces. Indirectly the skills developed in photography can be used in many other subject areas. Any subject that requires quality presentation of visual images would benefit from the skills developed in Basic photography.

Extra activities/costs? Photographic excursions may occur depending on availability. They may include trips to exhibitions and workshops as well as field trips to take photographs. They generally do not incur additional costs.
