SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING CHAPTER 13

THINK ABOUT: What are the major affects of substance abuse? What are major models and theories of addiction and substance abuse? What are important treatment strategies of counselors who work with substance abuse?

MAJOR SUBSTANCES What are common substances that are classified as depressants? What are major affects of marijuana on the body? How do opiates (narcotics) differ on their affects on the body than marijuana? Than stimulants?

THEORIES of SUBSTANCE ABUSE Disease Theory & Psychological Theories What are the major tenets of the disease theory of substance abuse? How have psychological theories expanded upon the disease theory? What would be difficult for clients who have substance abuse issues to believe a psychological theory of substance abuse?

THEORIES of SUBSTANCE ABUSE Sociocultural Theory & Integrated Theories How might an individual’s culture and environment impact their ability to have a substance abuse issue? What is an integrated theory (remember our discussion of counseling theories)? How would you pick a theory to use in your counseling practice?

IN-CLASS ACTIVITY You are a counselor working with a client with a substance abuse problem. What would you want to ask about in the initial interview of the counseling process? What would be important for you to know about this client to work with the client effectively? Make a list that answers the two questions above. Share your list with the class. 6

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING PROCESS Clients with substance abuse issues often do not believe that they have a problem. Simply confronting the client has been shown to be ineffective in counseling. Having other individuals in the client’s life share their feelings has been shown to be instrumental in starting the client to change their behaviors. 7

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING PROCESS What is medical detoxification? When should counselors use it? When should we hospitalize a client? What are residential treatment programs? What would be a benefit to sending a client to a residential treatment program vs. a day treatment program?

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING PROCESS A large part of the counseling profession believes that abstinence should be the primary goal of counseling. Counseling should not just focus on substance use but also reasons and triggers for substance use.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING PROCESS Different types of substance abuse counseling include: Individual Counseling Group Counseling Family Counseling Relapse Prevention

YOUTH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE Why is youth and substance abuse an increasingly important issue in substance abuse counseling? Why do you think that this issue has increased steadily in attention from 1960s? Remember that substance abuse usually begins in preadolescent or adolescent years!

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT… Would you hospitalize a client against the client’s will? Why or why not? How do you believe we should educate youth about substance abuse? How does our culture perpetuate and affirm substance abuse?
