GCSE PRODUCT DESIGN TARGETING THEORY Product Development S.C.A.M.P.E.R

S.C.A.M.P.E.R GCSE PRODUCT DESIGN TARGETING THEORY It can be difficult sometimes to ‘develop’ ideas once you have come up with a number of ‘initial thoughts/ideas’. There are many techniques to help you develop ideas further. A popular and useful technique is called SCAMPER. It enables you to look at your ideas and think about them in more detail. This technique can also be applied to the process of ‘product analysis’ which you will experience in later lessons. So how does it work? Each letter of the word SCAMPER represents a process. You look at one of your design ideas and simply apply each one. This then results in your ideas evolving and changing. S – Substitute - What elements of your design can you substitute (or replace with something else)? C – Combine - How could you combine other items/materials? A – Adapt - What can you adapt or alter? M – Magnify - Zoom in on a part of your design? (You can also use: Modify / Minimise here) P – Put to other uses - What else could the design be used for – dual purpose possibly? E – Eliminate - What aspects of the design could be eliminated (removed, deleted)? R – Reverse - Mirror image, back to front, positive/negative, reverse engineering*? Try it with your own ideas to form part of your product development1 *Reverse engineering………!!!!
