Car Commercial (No People) The “Evolution” of Media: The Influence of a Media Literacy Campaign on Self Esteem and Body Image Vanessa Dremonas and Dr. Natalie Smoak* Department of Psychology  Illinois Wesleyan University Introduction Discussion For decades, society has criticized the media for instigating many of the physical, social, and psychological maladies that affect females of all ages (Jeffreys, 2005). The media undeniably pervades every cultural and social arena, selling not only products but also communicating sociocultural values, images, and standards. Specifically, advertisements are notorious for creating and promoting a source of idealized imagery by which women compare and evaluate themselves (Han & Gregorio, 2006; Frith, Shaw, & Cheng, 2005). Conveniently, these same advertisements offer products and procedures that will theoretically help them attain this socially constructed ideal. Thus, it is not surprising women pursue the continuous and consuming goal of achieving “beauty.” However, recent advertising approaches, namely the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, endeavor to sell products by responsibly endorsing attainable beauty ideals. The present study seeks to empirically evaluate whether campaign efforts like Dove’s “Evolution” commercial are successful at reducing negative female body image and self esteem, or whether they are instead counterproductive to their goal. The results are statistically significant, but surprisingly inconsistent with the theoretical rationale inspiring the hypotheses. It seems counterintuitive that a campaign claiming to promote positive self esteem and value healthy body image in women would release a commercial that actually lowered both of those constructs. Ironically, participants rated both the complete and the modified “Evolution” commercial as more effective than the control, and even though there were minimal content differences between the two versions of “Evolution” shown, participants significantly favored the full version. However, it was this complete version that led to significantly decreased self esteem and body image. When the phrase “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” was removed from the modified version, participants reported higher self esteem and body image. This could perhaps be because it provides a more optimistic outlook toward achieving beauty. Without the caveat at the end, the commercial may inspire the hope that it is feasible to transform from an average-looking woman to a gorgeous supermodel. It might be possible that the phrase acknowledges the unrealistic expectations for women, but at the same time, it reminds them that they still do not, and cannot, live up to these standards. In addition, the commercial had no significant effect on the way women internalize the media’s unattainable standards of beauty. Participants who saw “Evolution” in whole or in part were not any less critical of models’ enhanced beauty, nor were they less likely to desire it. Methodology In this between-subjects design, 102 females (18-22 years of age) were recruited from Illinois Wesleyan University to participate in a two-session study. In Session 1, participants answered a series of demographic and covariate measures and then were exposed to one of three experimental conditions: “At Dove®, our mission is to make more women feel more beautiful everyday. We believe women with strong confidence and positive self-esteem are beautiful.” Results Experimental 1: Dove “Evolution” (Full Version) Experimental 2: (Modified Version) Control: Car Commercial (No People) 34 females Future Research Future research considerations include broadening the sample. Since the present study investigates predominantly Caucasian students from a small Midwestern university, the next step would be to include more diversity in age and race. For example, adolescent women could be included, perhaps not only within the Western world, but cross-culturally as well. Furthermore, it would be interesting to extend the study to a male population. This way, constructs like sexual attraction and objectification of women can be observed. The inclusion of male participants may provide insight into the way media literacy campaigns affect male perceptions of female beauty as well as their interactions with women. More importantly, their inclusion could provide insight into how men perceive themselves after viewing these campaigns. This is especially salient since in recent years men have shown increased sensitivity to idealized media images. Although women are the population predominantly targeted, they are no longer the sole focus of media images and campaigns. Finally, since all the measures in the present study are of a cognitive, perceptual nature, another future direction would be to assess the behaviors resulting from media literacy campaigns. This route of investigation could potentially lead to insights about eating disorders, relationship patterns, and consumer expenditure. F (2, 98) = 67.096, p=.000 A between-subjects univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and post-hoc analyses indicated that all three ads were differentially effective. Participants were significantly more convinced of “Evolution’s” effectiveness when it concluded with the line “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.” Participants also rated both the complete and modified “Evolution” videos as more effective than the control. Then, they completed a series of dependent measures: Advertising Effectiveness Rosenberg’s General Self Esteem Scale Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (a measure of body image) Finally, participants rated a series of 20 advertisements (10 ads featured models and 10 did not, see above for examples) on effectiveness, the model’s beauty, the attainability of the model’s beauty, and the desirability for looking like the model. In Session 2, participants returned 1 week later and completed the General Self Esteem Scale and the MBSRQ once again. Conclusion Hypotheses This study suggests that Dove may not be accomplishing the goals they publicly advocate. However, it is important to note that whether Dove deliberately intended this result or not, “Evolution” makes for a very effective marketing strategy. Explicitly, women embrace its effectiveness, but underlying mechanisms target their insecurities, thus encouraging the sale of its advertised beauty products. If Dove is legitimately interested in improving the self esteem and body image of its customers, new marketing tactics should be employed. In addition, results such as these provide legitimate concern for the true effects of other media literacy campaigns intending to fulfill the same purpose. The Experimental group exposed to the complete Dove “Evolution” video will be more content with their body image and have higher self esteem than those exposed to the Control commercial. They will also be less likely to desire or internalize the media’s standards of beauty in models featured in advertisements. The Experimental group exposed to the modified Dove “Evolution” video will be the least content with their body image and self esteem. Over time, these differences observed in the group who views the complete “Evolution” video will diminish. This is because the discounting cue (“No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted”) will dissociate from the more emphasized content of the commercial, therefore causing the sleeper effect to weaken the commercial’s immediate persuasiveness.
