Resumes must look a certain way and contain certain information: Name Address, phone number, and email Objective (optional) Educational experience Work Experience Volunteer activities Skills, honors, or awards Involvement in clubs/activities References (people who can vouch for you) The 3 Fs of Resumes: Form
These are good for college and scholarship applications These should sum up in a single sentence what your goal is Example: To major in architectural engineering at Colorado School of Mines so that I can be an architect who designs bridges in the San Diego bay area. Educational Experience Include your GPA, especially if it’s 3.5 or above You may choose to list your class rank, but it is not required List all advanced coursework you’ve taken Anything with an Honors, AP, or CMU in front of it is considered advanced The 3 Fs of Resumes: Form Educational Experience
Include the company/organization name and your job title Include the month and year you started working there and the month and year you stopped If you are still working there, put “present” for the end date Include a basic description of your job responsibilities The 3 Fs of Resumes: Form Work Experience
Include the amount of time, either in hours or by listing the dates when you began and ended List your basic responsibilities as a volunteer If you have no work experience but you have volunteered, list your supervisor for this under the references section The 3 Fs of Resumes: Form Volunteer activities
Think only about the awards you’ve received in high school Think only about the awards you’ve received in high school. These awards might include Academic, athletic, or musical letters; class awards (ex. Outstanding Spanish 1 Student); local, state, or national recognitions; or scholarships Skills include speaking a foreign language, proficiency with certain computer programs, or things that are particularly useful for the college/career you’re considering The 3 Fs of Resumes: Form Skills, honors, awards
List the clubs/activities you’re involved in List the clubs/activities you’re involved in. You should include two people who have seen you work and would tell a prospective employer or school that you are a good person for them Name, title, organization they work for, contact phone and email YOU MUST ASK THEIR PERMISSION BEFORE YOU USE THEM AS A REFERENCE!!!
