Role of the Regional Networks in Scaling a National Research Platform Jen Leasure, The Quilt

NYSERNet Family photo if you will

Role of Regional Networks in Scaling NRP Mission Built by R&E users to address specific needs Network performance and transparency People and connectivity and connecting people Geography of resources is important Shared values that encourage collaboration In-person engagements Efficiencies to investment at this level

Role of Regional Networks in Scaling NRP Leverage inherent role of regional networks trusted conveners coordinators among communities of practice build a coalition of the willing Key support role for lesser-resourced institutions Collaboration among regional networks Geography of resources again plays a role Inherent role of regionals – regional is a critical level of scale for many reasons – regional organizations play key role Trusted Conveners: conferences/workshops – spark collaborations and opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and funding Coordinators: It takes a central organization as the hub to provide the forum/platform for developing a people network. Often regional networks and other regional organizations take on an administration role for CI initiatves and resources as a trusted and neutral third party

Role of Regional Networks in Scaling NRP What’s the right size for an NxN perfSONAR mesh? Greater than 1 NxN by cooperative research group NxN by regional network - http://ps.onenet.net/maddash-webui/ NxN across regional networks- http://quiltmesh.onenet.net/maddash-webui/ “In a sense, we are creating a quilt…”

Accept that coalition efforts may will not look the same Moving Forward Develop a baseline – can PRP capture an operational list of “things to do to get started”? Convene a coalition of the willing Understand and engage existing science collaborations Leverage those institutions that have this knowledge such as multi-tenant HPC Leverage regional partnerships and extend them Accept that coalition efforts may will not look the same

Moving Forward Build trust within a coalition of the willing Define expectations Weekly calls, troubleshooting help - staffed by the technical folks who do the work Create networks with social media tools

Moving Forward Conveners - many pieces to scaling Leverage engagement efforts - ESnet, Internet2, ACI-REF, XSEDE, CaRC, CASC, NSRC Role of coordination and communication within regional efforts Role of coordination and communication across regional efforts

Moving Forward Training Hardware Funding ESnet training for research engagement OIN Workshops – Science DMZ and DTN Hardware Consider building and giving each R1 institution a FIONA Consider FIONette for smaller institutions Funding
