Randy Nguyen & Nick Romo Crisis of the 1850s Randy Nguyen & Nick Romo

Compromise of 1850 California being a free state The compromise of 1850 was a series of 5 new laws in which congress compromised to emitting the states in the west as well as distributing the state's territory powers. This compromise was meant to settle the 4 year political confrontation between the free and slave states, the five bills that were passed are: California being a free state Organization of the Southwest territories (Texas, new mexico, utah after the mexican war) Adjustments to the border of mexico and texas Elimination of slave trade in D.C More strict fugitive slave law

Fugitive Slave Act Law was passed on September 18 1850 as part of the 1850 compromise Allowed runaway slaves to return back to the South Slave Act was controversial Required citizens to assist recovery of fugitive slaves Denied fugitives rights to jury trial

Significance of the compromise. In regards to the time period that the compromise was in, being that the mexican war was just ended and the strive to obtain land in the west was so high, the compromise was meant to settle and organize the era of political stress with the free and slave states. By creating these laws that allowed new territory to be established and have a more organized border between states in the west, the compromise settle many affairs. However the compromise was most significant being that fugitive slaves were now easier to capture.

Aftermath of the compromise The south gained greatly by the strengthening of the fugitive slave law, the north gained a new free state, California. Texas lost territory but was compensated with 10 million dollars to pay for its debt. Slave trade was prohibited in Washington DC, but slavery was not. The compromise did not end all the political tensions between the free and slave states, being that slavery was still a major issue at hand, the compromise was limited in that it did not fully stop the tensions between the north and south, rather the compromise in a sense only postponed the civil war.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin 1852 The book of uncle tom’s cabin was a major impact in regards to the tensions of the 1850’s because it inspired people to go against racism and slavery. Through the influence of the the novel’s inspiring view on the property of human values, the book was a major leading factor that encouraged people to fight for themselves, this was one of the many factors that lead to the civil war. The book mainly demaned that the US was own up to its repitiation of being a “land of the free” and the book demanded that freedom must be granted to all people.

Nebraska Act of 1854 The Nebraska act of 1854 was in a whole the break up of the democratic parties. The act instituted the notion of “Popular Sovereignty” where people who live within a territory (state) can decide whether or not they want that state to have slavery. This was a major thing to clear up the mess after the compromise of 1850, being that the northerners did not like this new law, and in the end separating themselves to a separate party “The Republican Party” from the union.

Bleeding Kansas 1855-1861 In 1854 it overturned the Missouri Compromise Conflict whether Kansas was going to be a free state or a slavery state was a series of violent political confrontations in the United States

Dred Scott vs Sandford 1856-1857 This supreme court case was a major act being that the supreme court ruled that all people of african descent in the US were not considered a certified US citizen. This would mean that all african “americans” did not have any US rights to do anything, even if they were free or not. The supreme court also ruled that congress lacked power to successfully ban slavery in US territories. The significance of the court case caused blacks to be unable to be US citizens as well as sue federal courts, leaving them with no voice.

Raid On Harper’s Ferry 1859 The raid on harper’s ferry was an effort by armed abolitionist, John Brown, to initiate an armed slave revolt in 1859 by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This raid was especially significant because it was a physical direct trigger that would make the civil war even more imenit.
