Theory Elementary achievement is correlated with midlife IQ

Hypothesis There will be a correlation between early school achievement and midlife IQ scores.

Theoretical Construct 1 Early School Achievement -Operational Definition -Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) -Grades 3-8 were tested -Tests Language and Mathematics

Theoretical Construct 2 Intelligence Testing for Mid Life IQ Operational Definition -Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 3rd ed. (WAIS-III, Wechsler, 1997) -Measures IQ -Individually Administered by a trained research assistant

Design Study and Subjects 219 Participants who were members of the Iowa Adoption Studies Both IQ and school achievement data were available

Results School Achievement scores were highly correlated with WAIS-III FSIQ, sharing 41% of their variance. Verbal IQ shared more variance with school achievement(50%) than performance IQ(14%).

Results cont. As expected, higher school achievement scores were associated with more years of education, higher income, and higher occupational status.

More Results When computing partial correlations between school achievement and mid life education. (controlling for Full Scale IQ) School achievement and educational level was reduced by half (r = 0.17, p<0.05, table 3).
