Intro What is product placement? Can you think of any examples of shows that use product placement? Which products are being advertised?

Examples in 2017

Product Placement

In 2008. Ford, AT&T, and Coca-Cola each paid $35 million to advertise on American Idol.

Hold up your iPhone

Of the 40 films that were number one films in the US Box Office in 2011, 17, or 42.5 percent of them featured an Apple product. iPads, MacBooks, iMacs, iPods, and iPhones were featured nearly twice as many times as any other product. Apple’s products have now shown up in more than one-third (129 of 374) of all number one films in the U.S. box office between the years of 2001 and 2011

As for 2012, Apple products have already shown up in 50 percent of #1 films, so it’s already looking good for the 2012 award. According to Apple, the company does not pay for product placement.

Good  Examples

E.T.

The rumor is that Mars, Inc The rumor is that Mars, Inc., just didn’t think this was a worthwhile movie on which to spend their advertising dollars, but no one has ever substantiated that fact. Whatever the reason is, it was a big mistake—Mars’ competitor, Hershey, snapped up the opportunity to promote Reese’s Pieces. Hershey agreed to spend $1 million promoting E.T. in exchange for the rights to use E.T. in its ads. The payoff was a reported 65% jump in profits just two weeks after the movie’s premiere. E.T.

Mr. Bielec’s Greatest Example of Product Placement Ever?????

Harold and Kumar… Because of its national recognition, Krispy Kreme was also approached to play a role in the movie. Krispy Kreme was not thrilled by the idea of the brand being so closely associated with a Cheech-and-Chong-esque movie and turned them down. White Castle had no qualms about being featured and even agreed to promote the film with collectible cups, radio ads and signage. They didn’t pay a dime for product placement, however.
