Introduction Results Results Purpose Methods Discussion Knowledge and Perceptions of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination: A Student Perspective Marissa Ebel BSN, RN Jelayna Stauffer BSN, RN Serena Schweitzer BSN, RN Adam P. Taylor BSN, RN Kim Hawkins PhD, APRN Creighton University, Omaha, NE Introduction Results Results Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that effects 79 million individuals. HPV commonly leads to cervical cancer as well as other anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. HPV vaccination has been proven effective but only if administered prior to exposure. Healthy People 2020 calls for 80% vaccination rates of adolescents age 11-26, which is significantly higher than current rates. Barriers need to be identified to increase vaccine uptake. Controversial Issues 11-12 Too Young Sexually Active 68% Agree/SA 5% Agree/SA 2% Agree/SA Table 1: HPV Vaccination Survey – Likert Scale Questions Sexually Transmitted Cervical Cancer Yeast Allergy Purpose 100% Correct 98% Correct 50% Correct Assess student healthcare provider’s knowledge, opinion, and barriers to recommendation of HPV vaccination. Cervarix - Genital Warts Cervarix – Male/Female Post HPV Exposure Methods Table 2: HPV Vaccination Survey – True/False Questions 26% Correct 59% Correct 42% Correct Participants 122 adults NP Other PA Physician 20-24 24-29 30-34 35-39 > 40 Discussion Overall knowledge of HPV was satisfactory. Most students feel comfortable talking with patients about vaccination. Some concerns were found with differences between Cervarix and Gardasil, post HPV exposure, and yeast allergy. Future education should focus on these areas to increase vaccination rates in the US. Procedures The HPV Vaccination survey from Grabiel et al. (2013) was used to assess the knowledge level and attitude of healthcare provider students regarding HPV vaccination. (Tables 1 & 2) Students had 3 months to complete the survey. Data Analysis Descriptive statistics were summarized from the data. Acknowledgement We would like to thank Thomas J. Reutzel for allowing use of the HPV Vaccination Survey Questionnaire.
