Good Morning! NVC Warm-Up: Brutality and Western Civilization Congo Free State Writing Prompt Essential Questions: What did Imperialism look like in the Congo Free State?

Brutality and Western Civilization Congo Free State Haitian Revolution

Brutality and Western Values The Four Core Values of Western Civilization are rights, reason, individualism, and democracy. Rights: privileges and freedoms people have Reason: using logic, knowledge, and common sense to make decisions Individualism: value each individual person as important Democracy: government led by the individual people that use reason to protect everyone’s rights How is it possible for Western countries such as Belgium and France to believe in these values, yet also carry out brutal human rights violations in Haiti and the Congo? Respond in AT LEAST FIVE sentences! Valued profit more than their values Desired control which leads to brutality Social Darwinism, didn’t see them as deserving the rights

Read Your Textbook “Leopold claimed that his primary motive in establishing the colony was to abolish the slave trade and promote Christianity. However, he licensed companies that brutally exploited Africans by forcing them to collect sap from rubber plants. At least 10 million Congolese died due to the abuses inflicted during Leopold’s rule. As a result of his cruelty, humanitarians around the world demanded changes. In 1908, the Belgian government took control of the colony away from Leopold. The Belgian Congo, as the colony later became known, was 80 times larger than Belgium.”
