Students are key players in our recycling program and dedicatedly offer their time on a daily or weekly basis to collect, clean and take out paper, plastic and bottle recycling.
Classroom students take turns feeding the vermi-composting worms each week. Although at first, this job may have been viewed as dirty and undesirable, once the students began to understand the importance of these creatures and the harmful impact organic waste has when deposited in landfills, attitudes changed. Many students now dig into the worm bin with bare hands, breathing in the organic aroma and taking pride in this task.
Our campaign to reduce the number of garbage bags used in the school has been a great success – the number of bags used has fallen from a high of 14,750 in 2008 to just 4,250 in 2010; a reduction of 71%.
Our annual Green Start Project brings additional tangible experiences to Grade Four science as students plant, grow and learn from experts about Plants in Our World. Most of the plants cultivated in the green house are re-planted in our Community Garden beds.
This project is in partnership with Bow Valley Habitat Development.
