Hello Chemistry Student Today you will need a calculator and your notebook!

What is Scientific Notation? SCIENTIFIC NOTATION—the product of two numbers: a coefficient and 10 raised to a power “Product” means multiplication Coefficient always has one digit followed by a decimal and then the rest of the significant figures
IN science we use small and large numbers Big Numbers: One gram of hydrogen contains 602, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 atoms. Small Numbers: The mass of an atom of gold is 0.000 000 000 000 000 000 000 327 grams No one in their right mind would want to write these numbers too often. It would take WAY too much time!
Why we use Scientific Notation? Scientific Notation to the Rescue! The number of hydrogen atoms would be written as: 6.02 x 10+23 atoms BIG numbers have positive(+) exponents. The gold atom would be written as: 3.27 x 10-22 grams Small numbers (less than 1) have negative (-) exponents.
Scientific Notation Steps To change any number to scientific notation, first identify the first significant digit in the number Second, figure out if the number is smaller then or greater then 1, if it smaller the power will be negative and if it is bigger the power will be positive Then move the decimal point directly behind the very first digit, counting how many places you move. Then write the new coefficient and the power raised to the number of moves you made.
Small Numbers to Scientific Notation Example #1 0.150 Grams Example#2 0.0000245 Liters
Large Numbers to Scientific Notation Example#3 245,000,000 Milliliters Example #4 150 Kilograms
Scientific Notation using the calculator Ever gotten a # on the calculator like 2.35E23 it’s actually just calculator talk for 2.35 x 1023 You can use calculator talk to input these numbers into the calculator For example if you wanted to put (into the calculator) 3.63 x1034 you would input type 3.63 (2nd button then , button) 34
+−×÷ Scientific Notation using the calculator Let say you want to do the following mathematical process: 4.33 x 1021 ÷ 5.433 x 1012 = ? You can easily plug it into the calculator, just make sure to put ( ) around each # in scientific notation. Plug in: (4.33E21) ÷ (5.433E12) = ? Answer =
