LEADERSHIP STYLES

OBJECTIVE To know and understand the different leadership styles. It’s advantage and weaknesses.

OVERVIEW FIVE LEADERSHIP STYLES THE BEST LEADERSHIP STYLE ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE

LEADERSHIP STYLES AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP Knows what he wants Demands unquestioning obedience TOUGH PATERNALISTIC

LEADERSHIP STYLES BUREAUCRATIC LEADER Orders are exclusively the organization’s policies…. He manages entirely “by the book”

LEADERSHIP STYLES DIPLOMATIC LEADER Like a salesman Provides some limited-freedom to his people

LEADERSHIP STYLES PARTICIPATIVE LEADER He is either a “democratic or a “consultative leader. Provides high degree of freedom to his people

LEADERSHIP STYLES FREE-REIN LEADER

THE BEST LEADERSHIP STYLES The best Leadership style DEPEND ON: 1. The individual personality of the manager himself. The individual followers, the kind of people they are and the kind of work they do. And, the particular, situation and circumstances on any given day or hour.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE

AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP STYLE Advantages - Can increase efficiency, save time and get quick results. - The paternalistic form of this style works well with employees who have low tolerance. - Chain of command and division of work Weaknesses - One way communication - The autocrat manager must really be an expert - Its effect on people

BUREAUCRATIC LEADERSHIP STYLE Advantages - Insures consistency of policy and operations. - Consistent application of personnel-related rules. Weaknesses - Inflexibility in situations - Paralysis is situations not covered by rules - The reaction of people working under a strongly bureaucratic manager is the same as autocratic.

DIPLOMATIC LEADERSHIP STYLE Advantages - People cooperate and work enthusiastically. - A manager’s personal effort to explain or persuade a subordinate is usually received as an important compliment. - This leadership style is indispensable to staff people Weaknesses - Some people interpret effort to persuade them - The diplomatic style is the same as the pit fall approach - Anyone employing the diplomatic style must be skilled and complete salesman.

PARTICIPATIVE LEADERSHIP STYLE Advantages - When people participate in and help formulate a decision they support it - The manager consistently receives the benefit of the best information, ideas, suggestions, and talent. - Group discussion even though time-consuming before a decision is made, can force critical information. - This style encourages people to develop, grow and rise in the organization.

PARTICIPATIVE LEADERSHIP STYLE Weaknesses - Participative style can take enormous amounts of time - Some managers “use’ the democratic style as a way of avoiding responsibility - People resent the invitation to offer recommendations - Use of the participative styles can easily, if not handled well….

FREE-REIN LEADERSHIP STYLE Advantages - This style comprises the essence of full managerial delegation - Many people are motivated to full effort Weaknesses - Very little managerial control and a high degree of risk - This style can be a disaster if the manager does not know ell the competence and integrity of his people and their ability to handle this kind of freedom.
