What is the difference between these two sets of questions One What do you do on the weekends? Where do you play football? Who does David play football with? Two What is your favourite sport? Where is El Campin? Who plays football? The sentences in set on use an auxiliary verb (do/does) Students should notice that questions in set one have an auxiliary verb

When do we need the auxiliary verb When do we need the auxiliary verb? What is the subject in these question sentences? What do you do on the weekends? What is your favourite sport? Where do you play football? Where is El Campin? Who does David play football with? Who plays football? Subject Subject If the subject of the question sentence is the question word (e.g. what, who, where), you don’t need an auxiliary verb. If the subject of the question is something else (e.g. you), you need an auxiliary verb (e.g. do/does) Go through this very slowly. Get them to guess the subject of the question sentences first. Then explain that when the subject is the Quesion Word (who/what/where) we don’t need a aux verb. If it is something else we do.
