Encrypting Confidential Student Email Kevin O’Brien Daniels Technology Committee
Note my “DU-Confidential…” email arrived below in my Gmail account and upon clicking on it, I get the screen shown on the next slide--
This is screen that comes up only the first time you or your student receives a confidential email—be careful on the password rules when entering and click on the “Register” button.
This DU secure email screen comes up to read the email I sent encrypted to my personal Gmail account from my DU account; click on the “Reply” button to send a reply encrypted email back to yourself.
The reply email is automatically encrypted including any attached files or new messages as long as they originate from this University of Denver Secured website. I clicked on the “Send” button to reply. Note the URL address is “https://securemail.du.edu”
This is the Screen that comes up for the DU secure system:
Note that the Outlook screen at Daniels shows not only the reply email, but also a receipt for when I opened picked up my initial email.
Note I am starting a new confidential email to my Gmail account and it still is encrypted even though the “Subject” field has text before and after “du-confidential” and note also that “du-confidential is not case sensitive. You do need the dash (-) however.
Note that this screen came up when I clicked on this email in my Gmail inbox; once I supplied my email address and password and clicked on the “Sign In” button, I was transported to the next screen of my DU secure encrypted system.
My DU secure email system; note, if this was a student below, they could “reply” and even attach a file that would be sent back to me encrypted from the student.
DU subscribes to Zixcorp’s encryption service; note Zixcorp’s Help—Overview of Features shows that students would be able to reply, but not compose a new message, any encrypted message with this service to anyone at DU since DU is a subscriber.
