Presentation transcript:

KEY CONCEPT Anaerobic Respiration produces a small amount of ATP without oxygen.

Fermentation is an anaerobic process. Fermentation occurs when oxygen is not available Aerobic Anaerobic cellular respiration

There are two types of Fermentation: Lactic acid fermentation occurs in muscle cells #1: Glycolysis splits glucose into two molecules #2: These molecules are converted into lactic acid

Alcoholic fermentation Occurs in yeast organisms The yeast feed on sugars and do only anaerobic respiration. Glycolysis breaks down the sugar which is converted into ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide.

Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Respiration Aerobic Respiration produces: _________ ATP Anaerobic Respiration produces _______ ATP Explain why humans need oxygen to live!
