Annual Inspector’s Course Training Daily Inspectors The MOSP 3 states: 30. TRAINING DAILY INSPECTORS Annual Inspectors need to train Daily Inspectors to be safe and proficient inspectors. DIs are the eyes on the ground prior to every flight - vital in our system Only rated persons may examine DIs but Annual Inspectors must train them well.

Important because this is the first introduction to the GFA airworthiness systems for most people. A favourable impression may kindle an on-going interest in airworthiness. That is the point where YOUR interest in airworthiness probably started. BUT the Examiner must ensure that the candidate meets the minimum standard and is competent to certify a Daily Inspection. Has the candidate got the skills and knowledge necessary to certify a sailplane as safe for a day’s flying ? Train and Certify ? All AIs can train. Only Examiners can examine.

Risk Assessment: - Decided that the uncontrolled examination of Daily Inspectors candidates was a weakness in our Airworthiness System. - To ensure a consistent and adequate standard only some senior Annual Inspectors would be allowed to issue Daily Inspector ratings: GCWA Charlie Deal, John Orton, Rob Hanbury Narrogin Alan Arthur former RTOA (WA) Beverley Owen Jones former RTOA (WA) Peter Taylor AAO So your role is to TRAIN Daily Inspectors and to then hand them over to one of the authorised examiners to examine them and if they meet the required standard to issue their Daily Inspector rating.

Clubs in WA use two methods of training Daily Inspectors. Solely by mentoring, requiring potential Daily Inspectors to become increasingly involved in actual Daily Inspections. Must read and have a good understanding of the DI Handbook and understand the responsibility. By a combination of mentoring and formal training The Beverley Approach Beverley run a training night Followed by a morning at Beverley where we “spike” an aircraft with about 30 defects, some major but mainly minor and we then expect the potential Daily Inspectors to find all the major defects and the vast majority of the minor defects – but no-one has ever found them all. Controlled Spiking: Written list only Set and cleared by one person using the written list Cleared by an independent person also armed with the written list.

We follow all this with a written exam to ensure that the candidates have the theoretical knowledge of the Airworthiness System as well as the capability to detect physical defects. We use 18 multi-choice questions in our exam. So the formal training system that we use at Beverley is shown in the next slide:

DAILY INSPECTOR TRAINING Assisted with DIs at your Club Read GFA DI Handbook + Self test Attended DI Lecture Passed Practical Assessment Passed Written Test

The “BIBLE’ in training Daily Inspectors: - GFA’s Daily Inspector’s handbook - Recently revised and edited; 4th Edition is dated May 2011. Nowadays it is free and is available on the GFA website instantaneously at: http://2009.gfa.org.au/Docs/airworth/DI_Handbook.pdf There is an engine section coming.

WHAT MUST A DI CANDIDATE KNOW Section 5.10.1 of your BSE Student Study guide: - When a Daily Inspection is required. - Why a Daily Inspection is required. - The significance of the Maintenance release. Etc. Your role as a Daily Inspector Trainer is to: - Introduce new pilots to the GFA airworthiness system via the Daily Inspections - Point out how important it is: All pilots of the day depend on them finding any major fault - Encourage them to; - Undertake many Daily Inspections under supervision of many - On an increasing number of glider types - Obtain the Daily Inspector’s Handbook and read it. - Do the self-test questions it contains - When you are happy with them hand them on to your Club’s designated DI Examiner.
