CHEST PAIN

Chest pains By the end of this session you will be able to: recognise when someone is having a heart attack or an angina attack respond appropriately to someone who is having a heart attack or an angina attack.

Chest pains – heart attack What you may see: Pain in chest which can spread down one or both arms and to the jaw Grey skin Blue tinge to lips Sweating Sudden collapse Pain does NOT get better with rest.

Chest pains – heart attack What you should do: Dial 999 or 112 for an ambulance Help the casualty to sit down If the casualty is responsive allow them to chew one aspirin Be prepared to resuscitate.

Automated external defibrillator (AED)

Chest pains – angina attack What you will see: Pain in the chest which can spread down one or both arms and to the jaw Shortness of breath Tiredness Pain usually gets better with rest.

Chest pains – angina attack What you should do: Help the casualty to sit down Help the casualty take their prescribed angina medicine If the casualty is still in pain after 5 minutes, ask them to take a second dose If the casualty is still in pain after a further 5 minutes call 999 or 112.
