Genetics and Heredity

Heredity is the passing of genes from one generation to the next

HUMAN CELLS HAVE 23 PAIRS OF CHROMOSOMES Chromosomes The form our DNA takes in order to get passed on from parent to child. HUMAN CELLS HAVE 23 PAIRS OF CHROMOSOMES

GENE Section of DNA in a specific location on a chromosome that contains information that determines a trait.

One Allele will determine if your ear wax is wet! One Allele on this ‘ear wax’ gene will determine whether or not your ear wax will be dry! One Allele will determine if your ear wax is wet!

Strands of amino acids and proteins on the gene will have a specific spot for the inherited Allele…. Wet Ear Wax Dry Ear Wax

Parents will have 2 Alleles (one each inherited from their parents)

The one passed on to you is completely random!

Dominant over Recessive Doesn’t mean its less common in your genetic material However, just because a gene is recessive….

Mom – received two alleles from her parents

Heterozygous

Dad – received two of the same alleles

Grandma passed on= Ww Grampa = ww

Lets figure out the offspring ear wax!
