Click here to see interactive demonstrations. When the light and dark edges are on contiguous sides of the polygons, the polygons appear to shift up and down; when the light and dark edges are on opposite sides, the polygons appear to contort. The effect is similar to the “phenomenal phenomena” of Gregory & Heard (1983), who modulated the luminance of a surrounding field. A demonstration of their effect is shown in panel B.
