The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) Working to promote the health and wellbeing of the nation through research, education and clinical interventions in Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity.

The Government’s vision “Being fit and active offers huge health benefits.  It is crucial we encourage as many people as possible to be more active, more often.  We also need to help people recover from injuries quickly so they can stay active. ” Health Secretary Andrew Lansley – NCSEM announcement speech 2012 “The centre will share research findings and best practice with the entire NHS so that the whole country benefits.  This will ensure we achieve a real Olympic legacy in the health service.” £30 Million

NCSEM regional Hubs

NCSEM East Midlands ‘Hub’ is a newly built facility at Loughborough University Strong research base from Leicester, Loughborough and Nottingham Universities Co-location of research and clinical facilities will accelerate the translation of research discoveries into clinical practise

NCSEM Sheffield Innovative Hub and Spoke model with “Concord” and “Thorncliffe” spokes having opened in the last year. The model adopts user-centered health care design principles to co- produce new models of care with patients and stakeholders that have physical activity at the centre. The “Move More” programme represents a unique city-scale field laboratory for the testing of whole system interventions to increase physical activity.

NCSEM London The London NCSEM hub is the Institute of Sport and Exercise Health (ISEH) ISEH provides excellence in elite sports performance and elite and amateur sports injury prevention and management The London hub bridges the gap between elite sport, amateur sports and exercise prescription. ISEH Vision To provide world class teaching and training in sport and exercise medicine. To deliver improved health through increased levels of exercise. To deliver world class research in the sport and exercise arena

NCSEM Mission To lead the way in Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity research, education and clinical innovation. Through; Research: Leading research in sport, exercise and physical activity. Translation: Translating discoveries into improved pathways of patient care. Evaluation: Providing academic rigour to support high quality research and maintain the reputation of the Sport and Exercise Medicine specialty. Education: Supporting the education of healthcare professionals to improve the use of exercise prescription. Influence: Using influence to effect changes in policy around physical activity.

Themes The NCSEM has 5 themes each targeting a different aspect of the value of physical activity.
