Autumn classroom experience ‘The seventeen-day autumn classroom experience (ACE) is designed to build upon [trainees’] pre-course days in school and to help [them] prepare for [their] assessed placements, through exploring and engaging in various aspects of primary education.’

Key dates ACE begins on Monday 16th October 2017 Final week of ACE – including observation Monday 27th November to Friday 1st December

ACE tasks & activities ACE Tasks 1- 4 and 6- 9 must be submitted (05.01.18) as part of the trainee’s Curriculum, Pedagogy and Learning module. ACE activities are NOT to be submitted but remain very important as they begin to give the trainee very valuable information about the role of the teacher.

ACE task 6 SEN/D – to be submitted With the other trainees, talk to the school SENCo about the school’s approach to SEN/D & read the school’s SEN/D policy. Make a note of the in-class strategies to support the learning of pupils identified as having SEN or a disability, attend any intervention sessions they attend &, as directed by the class teacher, support their learning in groups or 1:1.

ACE task 6 continued Plan an activity each day to support one child or a small group of children identified as having SEN/D. Share your planning with another trainee or a member of staff at the school, e.g. class teacher. After leading the activity ask for feedback from the other trainee( where applicable) or from the CT or TA. Reflect together on the success of the activity in relation to the child or children’s progress. Identify and record a personal target with reference to SEN/D. Be prepared to discuss progress towards this target with your personal supervisor and/or tutor.

Teaching tasks build from an observation and support role to working with individuals and small groups to parts of whole-class lessons to whole lessons These tasks are outlined in ACE Task 5. We recommend that every trainee be encouraged to use these requirements as a guideline, with schools & trainees considering these a ‘minimum’ outline only.

What the trainees said ‘It was a wonderful school, very organised and welcoming. I feel the experience gained has been invaluable in preparing me for future placements and beyond.’

What schools said ‘I think the ACE days have worked well; it has given the students an introduction to teaching in school. There has been less pressure on the trainees to carry out lessons whilst being able to familiarise themselves with school policies and procedure and good practice.’

What schools said about trainees ‘All of the students that attended our school have been an asset to every classroom, they worked hard and asked all the right questions. They were punctual, polite and worked.’

What Ofsted said ‘The strong integration of university- and school-based training ensures that all trainees make good progress overall across the different courses and training routes.’

Changes from last year The format of the ACE Handbook has changed as a result of the feedback received from the trainees last year. The handbook should be easier to understand and the trainees will choose when to carry out their ACE tasks and activities over the duration of the period.

Teaching commitment See ACE task 5.

Observation visits ‘During the final ACE week, [trainees] will spend five days in [their] base school, and a 20-minute formative observation will be carried out of [their] teaching. The observation is designed to provide feedback, and targets for [them] to take forward into [their] spring placement.’ (p.3) Visits for core PGCE trainees will be carried out by the PATs and by academic staff from the PGCE programme.

Observation visits - SD ACE observations for School Direct trainees should be carried out by their school or alliance. PATs will carry out a short QA visit to see each School Direct trainee in the autumn or early January.

Trainees’ notes …

What I learned (on campus and in school) ACE TASK 6 : SEN/D - to be submitted Your notes in response to the sections below should total approximately 500 words under the following subheadings What I learned (on campus and in school)

The impact on pupils’ learning SEN/D What I did (in school) The impact on pupils’ learning Consider the children’s progress against learning objectives, success criteria, progress against children’s own subject-specific targets etc.). Tick the appropriate box below, and record the sources of evidence upon which this evaluation has been based. Good progress made Expected progress made Some progress made Little or no progress made My target for SEN/D

Teaching & Professional Development Profile (T&PDP) In addition to completion of the ACE handbook, ‘… part 2a of the Teaching and Professional Development Profile (T&PDP) should be used as a record of [their] progress during the ACE days of the autumn term and should be used by [them] to record [their] progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards.’

WAGOLL The best experiences for trainees have been when their time is carefully planned there is flexibility key members of staff take time to talk to them all staff involved have the relevant information trainees are placed in one base class (at least for the final 3 weeks).

Expectations from the university … are that trainees … submit the ACE tasks (1-4 and 6-9) to be assessed as part of module 12386 Curriculum , Pedagogy and Learning; use a blue university folder to hold all the ACE tasks & activities, planning, evaluations &other university documentation; focus on their impact on pupils’ learning & progress; have high levels of professionalism (including standards of dress & punctuality) .

School Direct School Direct trainees follow the ACE programme but in their home school may go to other schools in the alliance to gain additional experience could be observed by someone within the school or someone from another school in the alliance

Payments to schools Schools taking PGCE trainees will be paid by the university after the final ACE day.
