INFN National Institute for Nuclear Physics EGEE II - NA2 First Meeting Karlsruhe (Germany)June 1-2, 2006 Giuseppina Salente EGEE-NA2 - INFN

INFN The National Institute for Nuclear Physics - is a National Body dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter. It conducts theoretical and experimental research in the fields of subnuclear, nuclear, and astroparticle physics. Fundamental research in these areas requires the use of cutting-edge technologies and instrumentation, which the INFN develops both in its own laboratories and in collaboration with the industry. These activities are conducted in close collaboration with the academic world.

INFN-Grid Project Since 1999 INFN is committed to the study of GRID technology and to the development of a grid infrastructure for the Italian Research. The expertise so far acquired do allow INFN to be a reliable member of various international Grid projects, with a role of primary importance either in the developmental environments and technical and decisional bodies

INFN and EGEE INFN is an EGEE partner since the beginning of the first phase of the project with a primary role in almost all the activities of the project In particular, in EGEE II, INFN is involved in: NA2, NA3, NA4, NA5, SA1, JRA1

INFN and EGEE - NA2 What Has Been Done (part 1): WEB SITE GILDA web site (Grid Infn Laboratory for Dissemination Activities ), the virtual laboratory to demonstrate and disseminate the strong capabilities of grid computing. INFN-Grid project web site with useful links to EGEE web site. Now under substantial restyle, with frequent quotations of EGEE project, soon available on line. PUBLICITY MATERIAL and OUTREACH INFN-Grid project brochure (where EGEE project is presented as a major international grid project to which INFN is committed) INFN-CNAF TIER-1 brochure (where EGEE project and its related ones are well put in evidence) Translation of EGEE official press releases; issue of related local projects ones; distribution to industry and media; follow up with press cuttings, interviews to key-note local EGEE representatives (member of EB), etc. Realization of a CD-Rom on grid technology and infrastructure Realization of many posters used at various events

INFN and EGEE II-NA2 What Has Been Done (Part 2) ORGANIZATION OF MAJOR EVENTS Organization and hosting of the second e-IRG, workshop, meeting, and related proceedings (Dec.03). Here the embryonal EGEE project conceived the birth and the policy of the e-IRG, now integrated in EGEE NA5 activity; Organization of a “Grid Day” meeting (Nov.04) at the Italian Minister of Science and Technology (MIUR), with the participation of the Ministry, aiming at getting aware the Public Administration of the EGEE infrastructure potentiality; Organization of the workshop “From e-science to e-industry with Grid Computing”, (Genova, Dec.04), aiming at promoting the EGEE infrastructure among the Italian Industry; Organization and hosting of the 4th and final EGEE I conference (Pisa, Oct. 05); Organization of a “Grid Day” (Jan.06) at the Italian Minister of Science and Technology (MIUR), with the participation of the Ministry Delegates, and all major Italian Research Bodies and SMEs, aiming at analyzing the possibilities of a Grid infrastructure development for Science at National and European level in the FP7 and its application in the Industry.

INFN-and EGEE-NA2 What Has Been Done (PART 3) “NA4 Generic Application Meeting”, Catania (Jan. 06) “First Trigrid Project Workshop”, Catania (Mar. 06) “EuMedGrid Workshop”, Catania (May 06) “Terena Networking Conference”, Catania (May 06) “Garr-06 and the e-Infrastructure for the development Conference”, Catania (May 06) All these events were occasion to present and promote the Grid Infrastructure and the EGEE project to the external world.

INFN-NA2 and the net with Research Areas, Industry and Institutional Environments RESULTS: Local Meetings and workshops have produced: a strengthening of cooperation between INFN and Industry as well as other fields of research areas; Awareness of the potentiality of the grid infrastructure in the Italian Minister for Research and Technology; Obtaining of funds from the Italian Minister for Research and Technology, which will allow to work on two approved proposals for the development of a national e-infrastructure that will benefit from EGEE infrastructure and serve a wider national research area, including many new fields of interest, besides physics, and all major Italian SMEs. The intent of extending the interoperability with the European and all worldwide infrastructures is imperative. The new formed Italian OMEGA Consortium, with representatives from all major Italian SMEs, will focus on the needs of industry and will deploy its expertise to develop an e-infrastructure able to meet the demands of the productive world; The IGI (Italian Grid Infrastructure) project, will benefit of a pool of experts from many and various research areas, whose aim is the realization and development of a strong and reliable grid infrastructure for science at national and international level.

The Future Initiatives and Actions are already programmed and occurring: participation to “Italian Grid 06” conference (Milano, July 06). An event where INFN deputies, as invited speakers, will promote the potentiality of the EGEE infrastructure and present the overall project’s phase 2; Participation to “SC06” (Florida, Nov.06) with a booth where, under working new promotional material, will be exhibited along with the EGEE logo; Offer has been made to host the next Industry Forum in Italy (Catania) during next fall. Negotiation almost ended, with a very high chance of success.
