Introduction to Geometry – Transformations and Constructions G-CO.1.1, G-CO.1.2, G-Co.1.4, G-CO.1.5, G-CO.4.12, G-SRT.1.1b

Introduction to Geometry – Transformations and Constructions Vocab Transformation – An operation that moves or changes a geometric figure in some way to produce a new figure. Pre-Image – the original figure in a transformation. Pre-Figure –the original figure in a transformation. Prime Notation – the apostrophe attached to a symbol to indicate a transformation. Rigid – transformations that move a figure to a new place without altering its shape and size. Non-rigid – transformations that move a figure to a new place and may alter the shape or size. Rotation – a transformations in which every point of a figure moves along a circular path around a fixed point.

Introduction to Geometry – Transformations and Constructions Vocab Translation – A transformation in which a geometric figure is moved to another location without any change in size or orientation. Dilation – a transformation that changes a figures size, but its shape orientation and location remain the same. Reflection – a transformation in which each point of a figure has an image that is the same distance from the line of reflection as the original figure. Center of dilation – the fixed point about which the figure is enlarged or reduced. Scale Factor – the ratio of a side length of the image to the corresponding side length of the original figure.

Introduction to Geometry – Transformations and Constructions Vocab Clockwise – movement in the same direction that a clock moves. Counterclockwise – movement in the opposite direction that a clock moves. Enlargement – the increase the size of an object with dilation. Reduction – to decrease the size of an object with dilation. Geometric Construction – To draw a shape, line or angle accurately using a compass and straightedge (ruler). Compass - A tool used to draw circles at a given radius. Bisector – a point, line, or plane that intersects a line or angle at the midpoint. Perpendicular bisector - a point, line, or plane that intersects a line or angle at the midpoint forming a right angle.
