INTRODUCTION Nursing process was originated by Lynda Hall(early 1950s) and developed by Ida Jean Orlando at late 1950s as a result of building a distinct body of knowledge unique to Nursing when Nursing shifted from being a vocation to a profession (Hospital base training to University). Nursing process contributes to professionalism of nursing.

INTRO. CONT Generations of the Nursing Process 1950-1970: Problems to process 1970-1990: Diagnosis and reasoning 1990-2010: Outcome specification & testing 2010-2025: Knowledge building 2025-2035: Models of care (archetypes) 2035-2050: Predictive care

Intro. cont The use of nursing process helps in making and planning a good, clear and effective nursing care for the improvement of patients’ condition and its application may not be effective without adequate knowledge of the nursing process concept.

AIMS OF THE STUDY The aim of this study was to assess the basic midwifery students’ knowledge and the rate of utilizing nursing process.

Methodology A descriptive research design was used in this quantitative study to reveal the knowledge level and the rate of utilizing nursing process. The total population was 145 and sample size of 80 was selected using simple percentages from each class i.e year one: 52 students (29 students were recruited) Year two : 48 students (26 students were recruited) Year three: 45 students (25 students were recruited)

Methodology Non replaceable Simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents from each class . Data was collected using self administered questionnaire. It has three sections: demographic variables, knowledge about nursing process and utilization of nursing process Pilot study was conducted in Baptist school of nursing and the reliability of the instrument was 0.75. Data analysis was done using only descriptive statistics

RESULTS LEVEL OF THE RESPONDENTS Class frequency percentage Year one 29 36.25 Year two 26 32.50 Year three 25 31.25 Total 80 100

KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF NANDA, NIC AND NOC

Utilization of nursing process LEVEL OF UTILIZATION FREQUENCY PERCENTAGE UTILIZED 20 25 NOT UTILIZED 60 75 TOTAL 80 100

UTILIZATION OF NURSING PROCESS

In conclusion All the students had adequate knowledge about the general concept of Nursing process, about 81% were not knowledgeable about the concept of NANDA, NIC and NOC while only 25% utilized nursing process appropriately. Therefore , midwife tutors should ensure that the knowledge of nursing process is transferred to the clinical practice and the clinical midwives should monitor the midwifery students in utilizing nursing process during the students posting.
