MLA FORMAT for Shakespearean Plays Authors: full name at first reference, JUST last name thereafter. William Shakespeare>>>Shakespeare 2. Citation: Use line breaks ( / ) with a space before and after the line break for lines of verse. Do not use line-breaks for prose. Cite with act, scene, and line numbers. VERSE: When speaking to Curio about Olivia, Orsino exclaims, “…I turned into a hart, / And my desires … e’er since pursue me” (1.1.22-24). PROSE: Maria divulges her plan to Toby and Andrew: “I will drop in his way some obscure epistles of love…” (2.3.154-155).

Block Format 4+ lines This is for citations of … 4 lines of verse or more (refer to line numbers in play) 4 type-written lines of prose Any conversation between 2 or more characters. Double space Indent (10 spaces) No quotation marks; no period after citation Character’s name in all caps, followed by a period (e.g. VIOLA.) As it appears in text (do not use line breaks) Indent all subsequent lines Viola reflects on the Malvolio’s delivery of the ring: VIOLA. Fortune forbid my outside hath not charmed her She made good view of me, indeed so much That methought her eyes had lost her tongue, For she did speak in starts distractedly. (2.2.18-21) Feste points out Olivia’s shortcomings when they discuss her brother's death: FOOL. I think his soul is in hell, madonna. OLIVIA. I know his soul is in heaven, Fool. (1.5.66-67) 4+ lines 2+ speakers

Lead-ins: Include speaker, spoken to, and context Somebody said lead-in: When speaking to Curio about Olivia, Orsino exclaims, “…I turned into a hart,/ And my desires … e’er since pursue me” (1.1.22-24). Full sentence lead-in: Maria divulges her plan to Toby and Andrew: “I will drop in his way some obscure epistles of love…” (2.3.154-155). Blended lead-in: Shakespeare reveals Orsino’s anger when he refers to Cesario as a “ dissembling cub [who] …henceforth [he] may never meet” (5.1.173, 178).
