Body Cavities Cranial Dorsal Cavity Spinal Thoracic Diaphragm Abdominal Pelvic

Regions and Quadrants of Abdomen

Directional Terms 1. Proximal: closer to attachment to the trunk 2. Distal: further away from attachment to trunk 3. Lateral: away from midline 4. Anterior: front 5. Superior: above 6. Posterior: back 7. Inferior: below 8 Medial: toward midline

Directional Terms The hand is DISTAL to the elbow The elbow is PROXIMAL to the hand Your nose is on the ANTERIOR view Your big toe is MEDIAL to the other four toes The ears are on the LATERAL view The head is SUPERIOR to the waist The pelvis is INFERIOR to the shoulders

Body Systems Digestive: intestines, stomach, liver; digestion and absorption Circulatory/cardiovascular: heart, blood vessels; pumps and transports blood through body Lymphatic: lymph, immune system; protects body from infection and disease Respiratory: lungs, airways; supplies body with a constant supply of oxygen Integumentary: skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands; regulates body temp and protects body Nervous: brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves; body activities Endocrine: glands; regulates hormones

Body Systems Muscular: muscles, cartilage; movement Skeletal: framework (bones); supports and protects Reproductive: Male: testes, penis, prostate gland, vas defrens, seminal vesicles. Female: ovaries, vagina, fallopian tubes, uterus, mammary glands ; controls reproductive and heredity Urinary: kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra; eliminates metabolic waste, helps maintain acid- base and salt water balance and helps regulates blood pressure
